Shortage of space or money or both cause most people to make do more or less with the bathroom they already have. In many homes the bath room is small and possibly bleak as well. If your bathroom is mall, it may be out of the question for you to enlarge it without major building effort. Consider relieving the pressure on it by duplicating some of its functions in other parts of the home.
For example, could you install a second lavatory somewhere else? A lavatory with a very small sink can usually be squeezed into a space of about 3ft by 5ft. If there is no master bathroom off your bedroom, the installation of one can provide some very nice privacy.
Is there anywhere in the house where you could install a separate shower unit? Shower trays are from 28in to 36 in square, and you will need a clear space in front of your shower of around 28in by 36in for undressing and drying. Overall height averages about 6ft. Prefabricated shower enclosures are available as complete units today that look great and are easy to install.
If your bathroom is too cool, the remedy is usually simple - i.e. add physical warmth with better heating. What about installing a small brick fireplace opposite the bathtub in one of your bathrooms? A long bath gazing at a glowing fire can be a delightful experience - provided you have the room for the hearth.
When it comes to electric heating in a bathroom, safety is the prime consideration. You must be especially careful when using portable electric appliances in the bathroom. Shavers can usually be plugged into their own special sockets. Nearly everyone brings electric hairdryers into the bathroom these days, but record players, radios, and television sets - any type of electrical device - should remain in safer quarters, especially when small children are around.
Most small bathrooms are very short on storage and this is an easy problem to fix. Just add lots of extra storage in the simple form of open shelving. Bathroom shelves can be as narrow as 4in and still serve a useful purpose for bottles, aerosols, jars, spare packs of soap and toilet paper, and a host of other items. It is essential to provide a separate locked cabinet for the medicines. This does not have to be built in the bathroom, and being locked will eliminate the risk of accidental poisoning to small children.
