The layout of your bathroom can be very useful or very trying. If you are working with a small bathroom, organization of the layout is key to useful space in your bathroom. One of the best ways to figure out how to do the layout so that it will be useful is to picture in your mind how much free space you will have once you install the plumbing like the sink, toilet and tub or shower.

In smaller bathrooms, the layout is critical to having space to move about while you are in the room. For example, you would not what the toilet and sink to be on the opposite walls in line with each other and barely have room to walk through the area. Generally, placing all of the plumbed items on one wall will allow more room for movement through the bathroom.

For example, having the sink in one corner next to the toilet and then the shower in the far corner will leave one entire wall open. If your bathroom is not large enough to accommodate this layout, perhaps having the sink directly next to the shower will be useful and having the toilet in a corner will utilize space as you can. With the smaller area, it is also important to remember that storage units such as cabinets for towels and other things along those lines may not be useful. So when planning it is also important to plan where to keep items such as towels, soaps and shampoos if the space is not going to allow room.

Small bathrooms require much planning to provide adequate space for a person to utilize. It may be necessary to use just a shower in a little area instead of a full sized bath tub, which will conserve quite a bit of space. It fully depends on the user's wants and needs, but to utilize maximum space in a smaller area is important to the efficiency of the area.

Hanging towel racks, in shower shelves for shampoos and soaps and small vanities will use less space than the full sized storage areas and may help to utilize space in smaller bathrooms. The layout of the room is important because of the plumbing for the sinks, toilets and showers. It is not easy to rearrange a room with plumbing because it generally will mean moving the plumbing and in some cases creating new holes in the wall and floor to accommodate the plumbing.

When you start calling around to contractors to get a quote on remodeling your small bathroom, you might be surprised by the small number of responses you receive. On the other hand, you might get a large response from contractors who think you have a small, quick project. The key to successfully remodeling a small bathroom is to think creatively and to think primarily about space.

There are enough types and styles of fixtures and accessories available today to enable you to have a fully-functional, even luxurious small bathroom. There are also abundant ideas about how to use limited spaces to the maximum. If you are willing to think creatively about how you use space, design and color, a small bathroom can actually "feel" spacious and luxurious.

To remodel small bathroom spaces for maximum spaciousness and functionality, you must first learn to think small.

§ Choose either a tub or a shower; if you choose a tub, select one that is smaller but deeper.

§ Choose a taller but more compact toilet

§ Add a border at the top of the walls

§ Use larger, unframed mirrors to reflect light

§ Don't use dark or bulky fabrics for curtains

§ Use only a valence-type curtain at windows

§ Use glass block or other types of windows and don't use curtains, blinds or shades

§ Position light fixtures where they will reflect the most light from mirrors and other items

§ Use very few small decorative items

§ Use a tube light to brighten the room with sunlight

§ Use a clear glass tub or shower enclosure

Finally, add the luxury of a home spa:

§ Choose a whirlpool or spa tub

§ Install a multiple-head shower massage and steam insert for the shower

§ Use fogless mirrors

§ Install radiant heat in the floor

§ Buy a tub with an in-line heater to keep the water warm longer and save energy

§ Add an instant water heater if the bathroom is some distance from the water heater

§ Add sound board to contain sounds

Small bathrooms might be those added under a stairway or in a spare closet. They might be for children, adults, or both. A small bathroom might be a guest powder room off the foyer or living room. One thing they have in common is that they are - small. Another thing they have in common is that they call for special lighting.

Small bathroom lighting is dependent, in part, on the use of the bathroom. One type of bathroom light fixture might convey a warm, cozy feeling for dinner guests. Another type of bathroom light fixture might make the small bathroom seem spacious - or provide light for reading while relaxing in a deep soak tub.

Warm and Cozy Lighting

You can make a small bathroom feel warm and cozy rather than claustrophobic by adding the right light fixtures. Suppose this is a small half-bath meant primarily for guests to "freshen up" before dinner. You've used small-patterned deep red and gold wallpaper for warmth. What kind of light fixtures should this small bathroom have?

Try recessed, can ceiling light fixtures focused on work areas. Or use indirect lighting around the perimeter of the ceiling-wall junction. On either side of the mirror above the sink, add a wall sconce light fixture. Avoid large wall sconces, or those that protrude too far from the wall, as they will make the room look cluttered. Most lighting above tubs and showers is diffuse lighting, which is fine for a quick shower or bath. Diffuse lighting is also good over-all lighting to soften the entire bathroom. However, if you want to read - or get paint off of a child - you may want brighter, more concentrated lighting. Use a focused flood or halogen light fixture on the wall above the tub.

Choose safe, moisture proof light fixtures for this area. "Make sure that your lamps are UL rated for damp locations insuring safety," says Todd Phillips, president of lighting manufacturer Quoizel.

Space Enlarging Lighting

You can never have too much light in a small bathroom, as long as you use it properly. Perhaps the best idea for small bathrooms is to begin with indirect lighting around the ceiling for overall softness and warmness. Then consider these possibilities.

1. If your small bathroom has a window, use light-admitting, sheer curtains at the window. Add a shade that can be drawn for privacy.

2. Light shower or tub with separate wet area light fixtures, strong enough to permit easy personal grooming, but with dimmer switches for atmosphere.

3. On either side of the vanity mirror, use warm fluorescent vertical wall sconces to provide even facial illumination. Place a halogen light above the mirror for cross illumination. Place these mirror surrounding light fixtures on a separate switch.

4. Run a linear light fixture along the vanity toe-space to provide a soft night light.

5. For a family use small bathroom, place a halogen or flood light near the toilet, focused as a good reading light. Install a separate switch.

With all of these light fixtures layered in a small bathroom, you will always have exactly the amount of light you need for any given task. Yet you can make it cozy with dimmer switches, safe with night lights.

Helpful Tip

Small bathroom lighting need not be garish or insufficient. You can have plenty of light or cozy lighting if you layer your light, and control it with separate and/or dimmer switches.
