If your home is like most houses, your bathroom is one of the smallest rooms in your home, but that doesn't mean that it can't also be one of the most attractive! Even a small bathroom can serve as a functional and comfortable spot to take care of your hygiene needs. Having nice bathrooms can also pay off big time when it comes to selling your house- buyers are always looking for homes with attractive bathrooms. No matter what size your bathroom is now, if you are ready to remodel or redecorate it, you should start by planning ways to get the most out of the space you have.
A good way to start is to draw a small model of the room you have using graph paper. You will need to measure the room, and then draw it to scale on the graph paper (this is easier than it sounds, just decide how much space each square on the paper represents, like six inches to one graph paper square). Draw in things like windows, any existing fixtures that you don't want to change (like a bathtub), and make notes of where electrical outlets and plumbing access is.
Next, think of what you want to add or change in your small bathroom. Try experimenting with placing different things in the room by drawing them on your graph paper and seeing how they will work together. You can also check the measurements of items you are considering and cut out scale model copies of them that you can move around on the paper.
There are a few fixtures designed to help you make the most of a small bathroom. Look for fixtures that do double duty, like a combination bath and shower unit that is designed to fit into a corner, giving you more floor space. Or, you can find corner vanities that free up space while still being stylish and functional.
Another idea is to look for smaller scale fixtures, like tubs, shower pans, and even toilets, that are made in a smaller size that will better fit your room. A smaller fixture that does the work of its larger counterpart can help open up a room and give a more spacious look to even a small bathroom.
Don't forget about storage when planning your bathroom. While a pedestal sink may look great, where will you store the items that are under your current vanity? Items like towel racks, over the toilet storage cabinets, and well designed medicine cabinets can help you keep the essentially within easy reach. Again, look for fixtures that can do double duty while still looking stylish. By planning carefully, you can make even a small bathroom feel like a spa. Since your bathroom is usually the first place you visit in the morning and the last one you go to at night, it is worth the effort to make it into a calming and relaxing space where you can relax.
