Designing a Small Bathroom

Expert Author James Chapman
You're looking to put in a new bathroom in a small amount of space. This will add both value and convenience to your home. Where do you begin? The very first step is to set a budget and stick to it. Once you know how much money you have to devote to the project, you can divide it up into costs for labour and materials. Don't forget to budget in plans and permits as well! When possible, designing around your existing services and pipe work will be both easier and more cost efficient, whether you are re-modeling or adding on to your home.
The next step is deciding both what you need and how much room you can allot to those needs. Taking into consideration how many people will be using the bathroom will help you determine exactly what you'll need in terms of furniture, storage, and sanitary ware.
Carefully measure the space you have available. You can easily make a 'scale model' of your proposed bathroom by creating a graph corresponding to the amount of space you have available. Using the same size ratio and standard size measurements for the bath, shower stall, basin, toilet and bidet, create templates for those items. You can then use this simple model to explore different layouts for your bathroom.
If your space is simply too small to hold everything you need, check into finding the same things in smaller sizes. Smaller or narrower toilets, baths and showers are becoming more and more readily available, and can help you create a beautiful and functional bathroom in a very small space. A small vanity can provide both a basin and attractive storage for towels and toiletries. A combined shower and bath will give you the convenience of having both, while only taking up the space of one. Think creatively to find ways to save space without losing amenities.
Choose a wall colour that suits the personality of your home. Dark colors can make a room feel small, while light and bright colors can make it seem larger. Tile can add beauty and texture to the bath, and is quite durable. Very large tiles can overwhelm a small area, while very small (mosaic) tiles can seem too busy. When looking at tile, try to stay in the mid-size range for the most appealing result.
Don't forget to add those finishing touches to your design! Mirrors, towel rails, soap dish, shelves and toilet-roll holder.
Thinking about where these things will go before you begin construction ensures a better flow in the room. Choose these items with care - they can add interest and beauty while tying the rest of your design elements together.
