If you need to decorate your kid's bathroom, you have some unique challenges ahead of you. Young children use the bathroom in general much more often than older kids do, and are often accompanied by a parent. That makes a kid's bathroom much more used in general than those mostly used by an adult. However, most parents don't know how to decorate their kid's bathroom so that it's whimsical and "fun." Children can be very verbal about what they don't like, so if you're the parent of a young child, you might find that your kid disagrees with your design choices. We'll offer some tips and tricks so that you can decorate your kid's bathroom in a way that you'll both like.

Boy or Girl? It Can Make a Difference When You Decorate

If your child is a boy, you can decorate the bathroom so that specific interests are appealed to, such as cars, bugs, cowboys, and so on. If a young girl uses the bathroom, perhaps a princess or doll theme would be appropriate. Of course, your own child's tastes will be the most important consideration, so if your little girl likes to play with blocks and trucks, so be it. Of course, most of this consideration goes out the window when children of both genders are going to be using the bathroom. If that's true, then the bathroom itself should be kept in a neutral theme but still appeal to the kid's interests. Whatever the theme, you can accessorize in a variety of different ways.

Accessories and Decorations to Use

There are many different ways to accessorize your kid's bathroom. For example, if your child likes to play with cars, a curtain and bathmat set that has a car pattern on it is ideal. Or, if your children are fans of Disney in your house, they can have pictures of Mickey or Minnie, for example, in their bathrooms.

Toothbrush tumblers are another consideration, and come in literally hundreds of styles. For example, you could buy a dinosaur-shaped tumbler, or one of Cinderella. Lotion pumps or hand soap can be bought to fit within your chosen theme, too.

Other things to consider that may liven up your kid's bathroom include tissue dispensers, soap dishes, wastebaskets, or knobs. You can even decorate the drawer knobs in your kid's bathroom if you so choose. You can choose from soccer balls, jungle animals, clown faces, or the like. It all depends on children's preferences. Whatever a child's interests, and decorations you use in the bathroom can accommodate them.

As Your Child Changes, so Does the Bathroom

As your child gets older, of course the bathroom is not going to be appropriate if it's decorated in a Mickey Mouse theme, for example. As your child's interests change, the bathroom theme must also change. Shower curtains, bathmats, soap dispensers and tumblers can all be replaced to reflect these changes.

If possible, avoid using decorations in your kid's bathroom that might be difficult or impossible to change. For example, wallpaper with images of Cinderella on it may be very age-appropriate when a girl is three, but will be entirely inappropriate during adolescence, which means that the wallpaper will need to be replaced.

However you choose to decorate your kid's bathroom is limited just by your imagination and your budget. There are many accessories available to decorate with so that you can change themes easily even on a budget, and are really only limited by your imagination. If you know your child and what he or she likes, you'll be able to decorate the bathroom appropriately in the first place and then can change the theme as he or she gets older. With just a little planning and imagination, as well as a small budget, you can create and keep the perfect bathroom for your child.
