In my opinion, the best bathroom décor is anything that's easy to clean. The bathroom is the worst room in the house, especially if you have kids. So I try to stay away from knick-knacks and frills and keep things as neat and tidy as possible. On the other hand, though, I don't want my bathrooms to be cold, echoing caverns, either. So my simple solution for bathroom décor is simply to change the linens.
I like to change the look of my bathrooms a couple of times a year. It makes them feel fresh and new again. While you can't always redecorate a living room or a bedroom as often as you'd like, it's easy enough and cheap enough to switch up the bathroom any time you want. In fact, I have a friend who redecorates their bathroom for every season or holiday throughout the year.
The key to being able to redo the bathroom frequently is to choose a neutral color for the walls. That doesn't mean it has to be white or eggshell. It can be any color as long as it's something you won't get tired of. But I like to stay with lighter shades or pastels because they're easier to decorate with. Right now one of my bathrooms is a pale sage green and the other is a pale lavender, and they've both been through several makeovers while they've been those colors.
Then it's off to the linen shop for a new shower curtain and towels. Have you ever noticed how much a bathroom echoes? That's because of all the smooth surfaces, the walls, the tub, the tile walls. There's nothing to muffle the noise. And to me, a bathroom that echoes just seems cold, too. So I like to decorate with fabric, namely towels and fabric shower curtains, to warm the place up and get rid of the cave effect.
In each of my bathrooms, instead of hanging pictures or sconces on the wall, I've added an extra towel bar that I use to hang my pretty towels on. You know, the ones the kids aren't allowed to use. This adds a nice splash of color, it warms the room up and gets rid of that echo, and they're useful for when I have guests.
I also have one of those shelves that has coat hooks across the bottom hanging in each bathroom, and in my bathroom I have another decorative towel hanging from the hooks; in the kids' bathroom they use it for their robes. Either way, it adds some more color to another wall and warms up the room even more.
Of course I also pick up matching shower curtains and rugs. But I stay away from trendy things like Little Mermaid toothbrush holders and Rubber Duck soap dishes. I make sure all of my bathroom accessories are also neutral colors so I don't have to keep buying new ones.
Like I said, I like to keep my bathrooms as neat and tidy as possible. So you'll notice that everything I use to redecorate is washable - towels, rugs and a fabric shower curtain. They're also cheap and easy to replace. In a matter of minutes my bathroom décor can go from seashells and starfish to art deco just by changing my linens.
The bathroom can be one of the hardest rooms to decorate in any home. Check out some of our bathroom decorating ideas to help get you started. If you want more decorating tips and ideas just click here.
