Free standing screens have always been used for both practical and decorative purposes. Create a new bedroom look for yourself or your kids with a room divider at the head of your bed instead of a traditional headboard.

You can change the look of your little girl's twin bed by standing a fabric room divider against the wall and pushing the bed up to it. You can pin or glue flowers, photos, beads, even seashells to the fabric to make it fit whatever theme she chooses. A thin shear drapery panel attached to the top of the screen on both sides, then fanned out and tied to the leg of the bed, will give the bed a fantastic, princess look.

Your son might like wooden screens behind his bed, with pictures of cowboys, cars, or sports glued on. Maybe he'd prefer a cowboy hat and a lasso hung at the top of his new headboard!

For your bedroom, you might prefer the black lacquered and silkscreened panels of Japan, the rattan or bamboo of the tropics, or the padded, brocades of pure luxury. You can use plain framed tall room dividers (you will need 5-6 folds or panels for a king sized bed), and then change them as you change your moods, seasons, or even linens, by simply draping them with a few yards of fabric. Mosquito netting for summer, rich velvets for winter, light, airy prints for spring and rich, earthy harvest tones for autumn, can change the ambiance of your room in just minutes!
