Roughly one-third of our day is spent in our bedrooms. Because of this, it is important that sleeping areas are properly planned to provide a most efficient and comfortable space in which to relax. Ideally, each member of the family should have his or her own private bedroom. The size and shape of the bedroom is determined by the design of the home, its size, and the amount of furniture that will occupy the room.

As a minimum, a bedroom should be no smaller than 100 sq ft. This is a room dimension of 10 feet by 10 feet and is considered a small bedroom. Anything smaller than that would begin to rival that of a prison cell. In addition, this space does not include a closet which should be added to the 100 sq ft and not included as part of that total. For larger bedrooms of 12 feet or more, two foot deep closets (interior dimension from front to back) will still allow for a functional bedroom. An average to midsize bedroom (i.e. kids, nurseries, and guest rooms) is somewhere in the area of 100 to 200 sq ft. Ideal sizes would include the following:

10 feet by 12 feet (120 sf)
10 feet by 14 feet (140 sf)
12 feet by 14 feet (168 sf)
12 feet by 16 feet (192 sf) - May be the size of the master bedroom is smaller house plans
Midsize to large bedrooms are over 200 square feet. Bedrooms of this size are usually reserved from master sleep quarters. Ideal dimensions include the following:

14 feet by 16 feet (224 sf)
14 feet by 18 feet (252 sf)
16 feet by 18 feet (288 sf)
16 feet by 20 feet (320 sf)
Obviously, bedrooms can come in many other dimensional arrangements to include odd number feet and inches (i.e. 13 feet 6 inches by 15 feet 8 inches). However, to keep with the point of this article we are talking ideal numbers here. The aforementioned dimensions are ideal largely because they are in even numbers. It makes construction simple as raw materials are also in even numbers. As an example, drywall is manufactured in widths of 4 feet. Keeping bedroom sizes in even number increments cut down on waste of material and money.

Ultimately, the dimensions for a bedroom are somewhat predetermined by the overall square footage of the home. In addition, the furniture that will occupy the space is also a major factor in the scale of the room. Just remember that a small bedroom (min. 10x10) can max out with a bed (bunk, twin, possible double) and a small dresser while a midsized bedroom (10x12 - 12x16) can accommodate a single bed (twin or double), bed side table, and dresser. Larger bedrooms (14x16 and higher) can accommodate more furniture pieces and still not look and feel overcrowded.

Determining the appropriate scale and dimension of a bedroom is just one of many home design ideas that a building designer must consider. Planning the sleeping area of house plans require the experience of a building designer who has the knowledge and the capacity to strike the ideal bedroom sizes per square foot of heated space.
