Your whole family can still gather around the table even if you have a small dining room. It's just a matter of picking a design style that really works with your space and really maximizing your furniture usage. Here are space ideas for a small dining room.

Small dining rooms can still have a lot of style and decor in them. You might want to skip the traditional artwork and floral arrangements. Instead, decorate with items that you will actually be using such as dishes and plates. You can still have a chandelier in your room; it can even be the focal point. However, you want to make sure that it is in the proper scale so that it doesn't dominate your space and make the room feel even smaller. You can even find many chandeliers that will cost a lot less money and are only slightly larger than a pendant light. This will provide mood lighting without taking up too much of your space.

Go with lighter color furniture. Dark furniture can often seem quite heavy. This is common in traditional dining rooms because of the formal feeling to it. Instead, you could paint your old dining room table a bright white. A white dining room table can feel country, shabby chic, cottage, or modern. It depends on how you style your room and what accent colors you bring into the space.

Another challenge of small dining rooms is creating a sense of flow. These rooms can be off of your kitchen and may only be a breakfast nook. It's important to incorporate the items in colors in both spaces to create a sense of flow. This will feel more like a great room so that you are both of your spaces seems bigger than they actually are.

Learn how to work with oddly shaped spaces. This is very common in contemporary and modern homes. Your dining room might not be much more than an alcove. You want to find a table shape that compliments your space. Some contemporary tables will have chairs that push all the way under it so that they almost look like part of the table. This way you won't have a lot of furniture jutting out into your space and it will almost look like a sculptural element. You can also incorporate new furniture in your room. You could have custom-made shelves to use instead of a bar or a buffet. You really want to minimize the look of the furniture to make your space seem bigger and function better. Your room will feel small if people are constantly having to squish past chairs. Remove any furniture in the room that you don't absolutely need.
