If you've got a small main bathroom, or an en-suite or cloakroom bathroom for which you need a bathroom suite, you might think that you won't be able to fit all the sanitary ware you'd like into the space you have.
Solutions for small spaces are a big part of what bathroom manufacturers and suppliers think about all day, though. Our bathrooms need to be well designed and laid out to function efficiently and effectively and while they can all be beautiful, modern, luxurious spaces, they're all too often very small beautiful, modern, luxurious spaces!
So what choices do you have when it comes to squeezing all the features you need and want into your bathroom, without compromising on a sense of space?
Cloakroom suites
Specifically designed for tiny spaces, cloakroom suites and cloakroom bathroom furniture will save you space on a grand scale. Short projection toilets are ideal for small bathrooms, saving you vital centimetres of depth and allowing you to fit a toilet where otherwise you just wouldn't have the room. And cloakroom basins are truly tiny. While this is fine in a cloakroom, where hand washing alone is the order of the day, it can be a distinct drawback in a main bathroom, where a more accommodating basin is likely to be desirable.
Wall hung sanitary ware and bathroom furniture
Wall hung items boast a streamlined, modern style and lend an uncluttered and spacious aspect to a room. Whether you choose a wall hung basin and toilet, or opt for bathroom furniture that's wall hung, keeping your fittings off the floor allows you to see a greater area of floor space - which means your room automatically appears larger. It also helps you to keep the floor clean and clear - which will make your bathroom look more pleasing to the eye too.
Corner fitted bathroom fixtures
Fitting bathroom suite items into a corner helps to save space. Opt for a small, corner bath, a quadrant shower enclosure, a corner WC, or a corner basin. As you don't generally use corners fully when you're moving around a room, it makes sense to put your bathroom fittings in these corners, using space that would otherwise have been lost to gathering dust.
Shower baths
A shower bath is any bath with a shower fitted over it, allowing you to bathe and shower in the same space. This is great for those who are unable to fit both a bath and a shower in their bathroom, but don't want to have to choose between the two. A specially designed shower bath may be L- or P-shaped: this means it has a wider shower area (angular or curved in form) at one end of the bath. You're still getting two functions for one out of your space, but by sacrificing just a little extra floor area, you get a more spacious showering area that's more comfortable to use each day.
Quadrant showers
If you're planning to fit a shower enclosure in a bathroom that's got limited floor space, quadrant enclosures are ideal. The outer (room-facing) side is a smooth curve which arcs around your enclosure, cutting off the corner which on a square or rectangular enclosure would jut out into the bathroom. Offset quadrant showers are available if you have a little more space along one wall and want a larger shower enclosure.
Storage space
Adding separate storage units will increase the number of fixtures in your bathroom. Choose a vanity unit for streamlined storage that's integrated below your basin, or look at your planned bathroom layout and add bathroom cabinets in spaces that will be accessible, but not otherwise used. Think, for example, about fitting a wall hung, corner medicine cabinet above a corner fitted WC. This will suit the balance of your scheme as well as making good use of the space you have available. And the sensible addition of bathroom furniture to provide storage space will reduce clutter in your bathroom - the clear surfaces this leaves will automatically increase your sense of space.
