A nautical theme is great for boys' bedrooms - blue being a popular 'boy' colour and of course, blue in varying different tones is one of the main colours associated with nautical style. Antique white and rust red are the other two essential components. Which colour goes on the walls will depend on the size of the bedroom but I would suggest either the off-white or a paler blue for the walls - adding the red and navy as the accent colours in order not to be overwhelming. Mini Moderns in the UK has just launched their Whitby wallpapers, inspired by 1950s linecuts and featuring fishing boats being circled by hungry seagulls - perfect for a feature wall in a nautically themed bedroom.
I would suggest not overdoing a theme, as it can become tiresome and overwhelming after a while. However, if a child is enthusiastic about sailing or fishing for example, I suggest buying some inexpensive accessories such as a boat lamp, a little lighthouse for the bedside table, or little hurricane lamps and anchors. If a child has made ships or boats from crafts, do put them on display as they will add to the theme as well as allowing the child to take a pride in their own work. Themed pictures on the walls too will go down a treat. More 'grown up' themed accessories and furniture could include an oar on the wall having a boat-shaped bookcase and these are items that won't be outgrown in a hurry - do consider the age of the child and their enthusiasm for all things seafaring.
Think about how you can use fabric and soft furnishings to create the nautical theme too - Striped cushions in blues, white and neutrals make a great addition to the room too as will more specialised cushions such as those featuring seahorses, fish, shells or anchors. A plain off-white duvet cover with a striped blue and white rug on a wooden floor will be fresh and welcoming and will complete the look.
5 Key Tips
1. Remember the main colours for a nautical theme: Red, white and blue
2. Don't overdo it with the whimsical accessories such as too many lighthouses or 'gone fishing' signs!
3. Having 2 or 3 key accessories will create the theme so choose them carefully
4. Use natural materials as much as possible
5. Consider the function of the room and decorate accordingly
